monoliths & dimensions.

oh look!
it's one of my favourite bands!
Sunn O)))

Named after the now defunt amplifier brand (with a nifty solution of typographically portraying the brands logo in the band name), I wont go on or even try to explain what Sunn O)))'s music sounds like (you should cehck them out for yourself) but just move straight on to the fact that Sunn O))) are never short of cool imagery. and the cover of their latest album "Monoliths & Dimensions" tops all the previous album covers or photoshoots.

They have used the painting "out-of-round X" by the artist Richard Serra who i first experienced at the Guggenhiem in Bilbao a few years ago. More famous for his massive sheet metal sculptures -

- Serra seems to have painted and created a tangible sense of "nothing" but also create an area that encompasses everything. I really don't think Sunn O))) could have picked a better artwork to represent their music - The circular "dimension", which is thematic in so much of their artwork and imagery (from the O))) in their name to the circular iconography of previous album covers) combined with the "monolithic", almost religious sentiment created by the vastness of their soundscapes and Serra's textures and symbolic imagery all add up for a truly great combination.

just to treat your eyes, here are two of my other favourites Sunn O))) album covers -
Their first recordings - "The GrimmRobe Demos"

and their split album with Japanese band Boris - "Altar"
